GOD'S WAITING ROOM by Mary Anne Butler
A night. A storm. A raging ocean.
Asylum Seeker #3590352 stands on a tiny wooden boat on high and stormy seas. He cradles his small daughter, on his way to find them both a place of Hope and Possibility; where they can live safely - without fear of war or persecution.
Meanwhile; an Angel of Death hovers nearby; conjuring up all its powers to send them both to the very bottom of this unknown sea - silent, and black, and bottomless.
The Angel’s task is to make sure Asylum Seeker #3590352 dies before he reaches safe shores. And the stakes are high. If the Angel fails at this job then it will be cast off: wings removed and sent falling, falling, falling from the sky. Doomed to walk this miserable planet forevermore.
An allegory for a world which has closed its door on humanity, God’s Waiting Room explores themes of resilience, humanity, hope and displacement – posing the central questions: As a global community, what are our responsibilities? And where do we go to, from here?
