Brown’s Mart Theatre

Darwin’s first home for theatre and live performance

THE SOUND OF WAITING by Mary Anne Butler

Hamed Mokri stands on a tiny wooden boat on high and stormy seas. He cradles his small daughter, on his way to find them a place of Hope and Possibility.

Meanwhile an Angel of Death hovers nearby; conjuring up all its powers to send them both to the very bottom of this unknown sea - silent, and black, and endless.

An allegory for a world which has closed its door on humanity, The Sound of Waiting explores themes of displacement, resilience and hope – posing the central question: as a global community, where do we go to from here?

“Butler never flinches from big questions about hope and survival, and the choices we make in our here and now.” – NSW Premier’s Literary Award judges
