First Nations Women look to the future

Stepping into a First Nations women-led feminist future.

Indigenous women, white feminism and power; colonial violence and self-determination - what are the obstacles and pathways to a new future led by First Nations women?

This vital two-part event will be a masterclass in First Nations world views today.

Part I:
Distinguished Professor Aileen Moreton-Robinson will discuss her seminal work, Talkin’ Up to the White Woman: Indigenous Women and Feminism, originally published over 20 years ago. Never out of print, this essential book was way ahead of its time, demonstrating how white feminists benefit from colonisation and the unjust structural relationship between white society and Indigenous society.

Part II:
Chelsea Watego, Amy McQuire and Alison Whittaker represent a new generation of strong, visionary voices. This panel - led by Larissa Behrendt - explores what living as a First Nations woman is like when every day is yet ‘Another Day in the Colony’. Speaking up to the patriarchy, talkin’ up to the white woman and challenging colonial institutions, this will be a powerful, unmissable session that sets the agenda for feminism's Anti-racist future in Australia.

Rosie Batty and Grace Tame have built their lives around fighting for justice. Together for the first time, they share their experiences of being Australian of the Year, explore the power of personal testimony, and advocacy's personal cost.

Childhood sexual assault survivor, Grace Tame won the fight against defamation laws that gagged survivors from telling their stories. She was named 2021 Australian of the Year. Rosie Batty became a household name after her son’s murder by his father prompted her to speak out against family violence. She was named 2015 Australian of the Year. Both women were thrust into the limelight and submitted to intense scrutiny, criticism and attack from public figures, media and trolls.

So how can we support advocates who speak from traumatic lived experiences? When victims of violence move from silence to speech, how do we honour their stories? Join these two heroic advocates for a necessary conversation about upholding and protecting vocal survivors.

Beyond the Binary

Imagine a world with no gender binary.

What would our world look like if all our current gendered expectations disappeared, and what needs to happen for thisto be achieved?

What would our world look like if gender binaries disappeared completely? Yves Rees leads a provocative panel discussion that seeks to imagine this future where rigid binaries and gendered expectations have broken down entirely. What benefits does this entail for individual autonomy and authenticity and for society? And what would need to happen to get there?

Among an array of issues, this panel will examine the connection between challenging the binary and fighting colonialism and racism, as well as the relationship between transness and feminism. In the future, how can feminism and women better support gender beyond the binary? And how can going beyond the binary help us all challenge the patriarchy?

Facing Up: Roxane Gay & Nakkiah Lui

Nothing is off-limits in this conversation between these two incredible writers whose work challenges us with the hard questions about racism and misogyny today.

One of the strongest voices of American feminism in recent years, Roxane Gay, returns to the Sydney Opera House and All About Women to engage with the Gamilaroi/Torres Strait Islander woman, playwright, actor and screenwriter Nakkiah Lui. Both known for speaking with radical authenticity about their own experiences of racism, misogyny, and trauma, expect razor-sharp commentary on issues such as young women's personal testimonies disclosing violence and sexual assault, the Black Lives Matter movement, and how these issues play out differently for Black women in the US and First Nations and other women of colour in Australia.

It's all up for discussion - even personal likes and grievances, and the life of writing and creativity - so don't miss this exclusive, intimate conversation.

Mothers, daughters, sisters, lovers, femmes, dykes and friends. Five incredible LGBTQI+ writers share a personal tale about their relationship to womanhood - intimate, considered and, as always, rooted in community.

Queerstories invites storytellers to share the tale they want to tell, but are never asked to, without agenda, without the burden of explaining oneself for a questioning mainstream. From a community that’s constantly grappling with gender, a process simultaneously fascinating and frustrating, what will we hear when we ask for a story ‘all about women’?

Queerstories celebrates the culture and creativity of the LGBTQI+ community, one true story at a time. A national storytelling project directed by Maeve Marsden, Queerstories has sold out at festivals and independent venues around the country, with a book and an award-winning podcast boasting more than 300 stories.
